Departmental News: Communication Disorders
by Aloma Lykes, MCD, CCP-SLP '76

The speech-language pathology students started the summer semester with a free speech and hearing screening for the LSU Health Sciences Center community. Many of the 23 new SLP students took advantage of the screening.

Paul Blanchet has accepted a position at Fredonia University in New York. He leaves us at the end of July.

Theresa Nicholls, Clinic Coordinator for Speech-Language Pathology, was on the airwaves. She discussed “Baby Signing” (teaching sign language to toddlers) on WWL Radio.

The Doctorate of Audiology students started a new organization on campus, the National Association of Future Doctors of Audiology (NAFTA). They had a bake sale recently to assist with their operating budget. The next meeting of the American Academy of Audiology (AAA) will be in Minneapolis.

Robert Turner has remained active in the Department. He served on the Program Committee for the annual meeting of the American Academy of Audiology and was appointed an Associate Editor for ASHA’s Journal of Speech-Language-Hearing Research. The Hearing Journal recently designated two of Dr. Turner’s publications as some of the “Best-of- the- Best” for audiology literature published in 2004.
