Departmental News: Physical Therapy
by J. Gregg Jones, PT '85
Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center
School of Allied Health is pleased to announce its
new Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) degree
program. The Physical Therapy program is fully
accredited by the Commission on Accreditation in
Physical Therapy Education (CAPTE) of the American
Physical Therapy Association. The DPT Program will
replace the current entry-level Master of Physical
Therapy degree program at LSUHSC and the new program
will be offered beginning in May, 2006.
Students with a bachelor degree may apply to the DPT
Program without first going through a master degree
program. Beth Weiss, P.T., Ph.D., Department Head of
the Physical Therapy program at LSUHSC, states that
the profession of physical therapy is moving toward
autonomous practice with practitioners holding the
clinical doctorate as their first professional
degree. The LSUHSC Department of Physical Therapy is
strategically developed to provide this level of
professional development. The program is structured
to accommodate students from a variety of
educational backgrounds.
The LSUHSC School of Allied Health Professions has a
strong reputation for addressing emerging
educational needs within the community for qualified
health care professionals. The new Doctor of
Physical Therapy degree program is the latest
innovative academic development LSUHSC is providing
to its students and to the state.
