The department is located in New Orleans, the largest city in Louisiana, a metropolitan area of more than one million people. Almost one-third of the population of Louisiana is within a reasonable commute to the New Orleans campus. 

The size of the metropolitan population provides students with a diverse clinic population with various ethnic backgrounds, and whose native language may be other than English. As a result, students in this program have rich clinical experiences that are qualitatively different from those obtained outside of this geographic region. Affiliated Medical Institutions

     Within the immediate vicinity, there are five hospitals, a rehabilitation institute, two medical schools, a school of nursing, and a school of allied health professions. By being part of the LSU Health Sciences Center (LSUHSC), the department has access to disciplines that are increasingly important to the training of our students.

In addition to the allied health disciplines, such as rehabilitation counseling, cardiopulmonary science, and occupational and physical therapy, the department also has access to otolaryngology, genetics, pharmacology, and neuroscience, among other related disciplines. All Allied Health students attend a Grand Rounds for one semester to facilitate an interdisciplinary approach to treatment.

Clinical Treatment Practicum Sites

     A large number of clinic practicum sites are available to our students, including hospitals with both inpatient and outpatient clinics, medical centers, rehabilitation settings, nursing homes, private practices, early infant developmental settings, residential settings, public health offices, and clinics which serve specific populations such as individuals who have cochlear implants or cerebral palsy or who are hearing impaired.
