  • Respiratory Therapist (RTs) are licensed health care professionals who specialize in the promotion of optimum cardiopulmonary function and health.
  • RTs participate in clinical decision-making and are focused on the prevention, assessment, treatment, management, control, diagnostic, evaluation, education, and care of patients with deficiencies and abnormalities of cardiopulmonary system.
  • RTs are critical thinkers involved in the development and implementation of effective care plans and protocols.
  • RTs are a vital part of a hospital's lifesaving response team.

According to the 2010 Bueau of Labor and Statistics, Respiratory Therapy is one of the fastest growing specialties in health care (expected to grow by 21% from 2008-2018).

RTs treat a wide variety of patients from

  • Premature infants with undeveloped lungs.
  • Children with asthma.
  • Trauma victims unable to breathe.
  • Elderly patients with emphysema.

RTs work flexible hours

  • 8 and 12 hour shifts.
  • Days, evenings, nights.
