School of Health Professions
The School of Health Professions has a distinguished history of preparing health professionals while continually evolving to meet the changing needs of health care and the communities we serve. Over the decades, the School has grown beyond its roots in traditional health professions education to become a comprehensive academic community with a diverse portfolio of degree programs, interdisciplinary clinical services, innovative research, and meaningful community partnerships. This growth reflects both the strength of the School’s foundation and its continued commitment to advancing education, clinical practice, research, and service. The School of Health Professions is home to seven academic departments including Communication Disorders (Audiology & Speech-Language Pathology), Cardiopulmonary Science (Cardiovascular Sonography & Respiratory Therapy), Counseling, Medical Laboratory Science, Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy, and Physician Assistant Studies. Additionally, the school also houses the Human Development Center, which is Louisiana’s federally designated University Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities (UCEDD). Together, these departments represent the scope and depth of a school that has grown into a leading institution in health professions education, research, clinical service, and community partnership.

The Cardiovascular Sonography Program prepares students to use advanced imaging technology to evaluate heart and vascular function. Students gain hands-on clinical experience while developing the skills needed to support the diagnosis and management of cardiovascular conditions..
The Counseling Program prepares students to become licensed professional counselors dedicated to promoting mental health and well-being. Through academic coursework and supervised clinical experiences, graduates are equipped to serve individuals, families, and communities.
The Medical Laboratory Science program trains future laboratory professionals to perform the diagnostic testing that supports patient care. Students develop expertise in laboratory science, quality assurance, and emerging technologies through rigorous coursework and clinical experiences.
The Occupational Therapy Program prepares students to help individuals participate fully in the activities that matter most to them. Through innovative education, research, and clinical practice, graduates promote health, independence, and quality of life across diverse populations.
The Physical Therapy program prepares students to become movement experts who help patients restore function, reduce pain, and improve mobility. The program combines evidence-based education, research, and hands-on clinical experiences to develop compassionate and skilled physical therapists.
The Respiratory Therapy Program prepares future respiratory therapists to evaluate, treat, and manage patients with cardiopulmonary disorders across the lifespan. Students gain extensive clinical experience while developing the skills needed to provide specialized respiratory care in a variety of healthcare settings.
The Speech-Language Pathology Program prepares students to assess and treat speech, language, swallowing, and hearing disorders. Programs emphasize evidence-based practice, research, and clinical education to improve communication and quality of life for individuals of all ages including pediatrics to older adults.
